Saint-Romain, the wine-barrel capital.Burgundy is the land of wine par excellence. And where there is wine, there are barrels. As you might expect, there are currently around twenty cooperages in the region.
There have always been coopers in Saint-Romain. Even today, the village is known for its two cooperages, which is exceptional for a village of 250 inhabitants.
At one of the cooperages, François Frères, the world market leader in business since 1910, their expertise has been passed down through four generations.
The barrel, called a ‘fût’ or ‘pièce’ in Burgundy, is intimately connected with the work of the grape growers. Because of their size, the wood surface and the micro-oxygenation that occurs through the pores of the wood, exceptional wines have evolved in these barrels. During maturation, they contribute oaky notes to a greater or lesser degree.
Working as a cooper is much more than a profession – it’s a passion.

Far from the bustle of tourism, this picturesque village at the foot of the cliffs has retained its authenticity thanks to its well-preserved architecture and the originality of its location.
You will discover Saint-Romain-le-Haut nestled above the cliffs where the church and the ruins of the old castle dominate, and Saint-Romain-le-Bas, where the wine-growing activity, the town hall and the school are located.
